Building a Board with Vision and Diversity

Westmorland's Board Transformation Journey

I just wanted to write and say thank you for doing an outstanding job on a challenging assignment. I was extremely impressed with the candidates’ technical skills, their strong understanding of our brand, and their genuine enthusiasm for it too. It really showed that you had thought carefully about finding people who were right for us. We always knew it was going to be difficult to fill all four positions, so to place a whole team is a real triumph.
Sarah Dunning, Chair
Westmorland, a family-owned service area operator, faced an opportunity under the leadership of newly appointed CEO.

The mission was to assemble a new board comprising a Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Financial Officer, People Director, and Operations Director, bringing diversity of opinion and a consistency of values. Achieving the right dynamic within the board was crucial, with location presenting an additional hurdle in attracting the right talent.
Understanding the delicate balance required to meet Westmorland’s needs, our approach was meticulous and strategic from the onset. We dedicated ourselves to understanding the essence of Westmorland’s brand, its values, and the vision of for the company’s future. This understanding allowed us to conduct a search that was as much about finding individuals with exceptional technical skills as it was about ensuring these leaders shared a genuine enthusiasm and alignment with Westmorland’s ethos.

This process involved careful consideration of how each candidate would together form a cohesive and effective leadership team.
The outcome of our targeted search and selection process was the successful appointment of a fully aligned, diverse board. Each member brought to the table the requisite technical expertise and a deep appreciation of Westmorland’s brand and values.
