Strategic NED Appointments for a Leading Insurance Mutual

Finding Two Non-Executive Directors with Succession Potential

Our client, a modestly sized insurance mutual faced the urgent need to appoint two new Non-Executive Directors (NEDs), with the most pressing requirement being to fill the role of the chair for the audit committee following the incumbent’s resignation.

The search, initially handled by another headhunter, had failed to meet the client’s expectations, leading to Redgrave taking over. The first NED position demanded a candidate with a strong background as a CFO, preferably within a life insurance environment, and with experience in implementing Solvency II. The second NED position emphasised diversity and a focus on someone with a deep knowledge of managing risk.
Our approach was consultative and bespoke. In just three weeks, we developed a detailed long list for the first NED role, which we presented to the entire Board. This inclusive process allowed every Board member to select their top candidates, ensuring a collective decision-making approach. The subsequent shortlist spotlighted five outstanding candidates, each with a distinct set of skills and experiences.

Addressing the specific requirements for the second NED role, our search was fine-tuned to target individuals with a proven track record in business leadership, with extensive knowledge in risk management, governance, regulation, and compliance. Working at pace, we returned a longlist, and the Board moved quickly to get interviews underway.

For both roles, the emphasis on cultural alignment necessitated candidates to demonstrate a strong ability to connect and establish rapport during the interview.
The exhaustive search resulted in the successful appointment of two exceptional NEDs. The first, an ex-CFO of two FTSE 250 firms with an established non-executive career, brought immediate value and potential for future succession. The second NED, coming from a strong background in running the UK business of Europe’s largest pet insurer, marked her first NED role, perfectly aligning with both her career trajectory and the client’s needs.

This successful outcome reflected Redgrave’s deep understanding of the intricacies involved in such high-level appointments. Our consultative partnership approach was key in understanding and fulfilling the client’s unique requirements, setting us apart from less sophisticated firms.
