Unite, the leading provider of student accommodation in the UK, faced a challenge when their CEO announced retirement. Selecting the next leader was more than just the need to fill a seat; it was about guiding the company into a thriving future.
An initial plan was formed to promote the CFO while reshuffling the team beneath him. To ensure a seamless transition, Unite turned to Redgrave for our Executive Assessment and market expertise which offered a data-led approach to appraising the proposed leadership team. The challenge was to evaluate the potential of CFO to step up to CEO, whilst reviewing the knock-on effect of him vacating the CFO role and assessing the other members of the newly proposed executive team.
Our approach involved a multi-faceted assessment process designed to provide comprehensive insights and a clear direction.
We conducted in-depth assessments, incorporating psychometric, behavioural and aptitude testing to evaluate the competencies and growth potential of the individuals involved. We collected 360 degree input from direct reports, colleagues, and the outgoing CEO, offering a well-rounded perspective on leadership qualities and areas for improvement. Finally, our functional and market experts carried out thorough career interviews with the participants, exploring their capabilities, readiness, and potential development areas in their new roles.
Recognising the importance of collaboration and combined performance, we also analysed the overall team dynamics. This allowed us to identify the group’s collective strengths and weaknesses, and help advise on behavioural gaps to address, areas of potential overlap to be aware of, and complementary pairings to utilise in certain situations.
The personalised assessment reports we created were delivered to each candidate, providing a clear roadmap for personal and professional growth, helping them realise what they needed to do differently to excel in their new positions.
This, along with the comprehensive team report was presented to Unite’s board, guided by data and insights, to provide confidence that the proposed leadership team was the right one to take the business forwards.
